~Chapter 1~

"Rayen....Raaayeeennn?  Hey, wake up silly."  I opened my eyes to find myself sitting in a half lotus position in my bedroom floor.  Okay. What just happened?  I blinked and looked up at my room mate, well not really room, more like apartment mate, Daemon.  His short red hair was spiked up in the back and was longer, loose in front swinging over his milky blue eye, while his other perfect blue eye glanced at me worriedly.  "I like your hair.  When did you get it cut?"  I asked trying to wrangle my mind back into place.  I felt disoriented, disoriented in the place i knew so well.  I felt more lost now then i had in the other place.  Well, I suppose it was just a dream, but it surely didn't feel like a dream.  "Silly.  I told you i was going to get it done earlier when you woke up.  Are you feeling okay?  What are you doing on the floor?"  Daemon walked over and kneeled in front of me, moving my hair back from my face so he could look into my eyes.  I smiled weakly at him."I guess I fell asleep."
"That doesn't explain why you are sitting on the floor."
"I was meditating."  Wait. I remember now, I really had been meditating. I had an hour before I had to go to work so I thought I would....work!  "Quick, what time is it?"  I asked Daemon, quickling standing, only to fall backwards at the pain in my ankle.  I landed on my bed with a slight oof, my hand immediately going to my ankle touching and rubbing slightly wincing when i saw how swollen it was.  "How did you manage to do that?" Daemon asked sitting on my bed and taking my ankle gently in his hands.  "I don't know."  I said, puzzled, and apparently so because Daemon didn't ask anything else after that but slowly started to massage my ankle.  "Oh, that feels good.  Wait...what am I going to do for work? What time is it?"  Daemon put his hand on my shoulder holding me in place as he chuckled.  "Rayen relax.  You have a whole hour before you have to leave for work.  Why you have to be thirty minutes early I will never know."
"It helps keep my stress levels down?" I said giving the old excuse.  It was partly true, but i didn't want to discuss the workings and going ons of Club Trix to Daemon.  He's there every night with the band anyway, I'm sure he knows about it more then i do.  I was bartender there. A strange and unusal choice for me to be sure, I don't even drink for example, but for whatever reason it worked, I was a good bartender.  I frowned and glanced down at my ankle.  I was not looking forward to having to stand on that for eight and a half hours.  Daemon chuckled at my responce as he always did, a knowing glint in his eye.  "Are we sure it has nothing to do with having to see the boss every night for those thirty minutes?"  I stared at him.  When had he found that out?  I glanced back down at my ankle watching his hands as they tenderly massaged me, easing the pain.  I noticed something then. His hands has a very faint green line around them.  It wasn't like his skin was tinted green, but more like his hands were outlined in green.  The outline seemed to not be touching his skin, like it was a breath apart though.  "Rayen...come on tell me, inquiring minds want to know."
"Want to know what?"  I asked glancing back at Daemon, trying to get my mind back on the conversation at hand.
"You are even more scattered brain tonight then usual.  Did you by chance hit your head?"
"No, but...oh...how did you find out about the meetings with Tobias?"
"Tobias?  You too are on a first named basis?"  Daemon looked at me with wide eyes.  I sighed and glanced away.  Great, now I got him really curious.  How was I going to get out of this one? "No, we are not.  But i'm not addressing Mr. duHeaven right now am I?   So why not use his first name when talking about him behind his back?"  I looked back at Daemon carefully searching his eye for a hint of if he believed me or not.  As usual i could find nothing, the standard bemused look was back on his face.  I should start calling that his poker face.  I wanted to push aside the hair that fell across his right eye, the damaged one, I wish he didn't feel so self concious about it.  "Well you have me there, but really Rayen, what happens in those meetings of yours? Does big bad Tobias lecture you or something?"  His voice told me he thought it was more along the lines of "something."  I sighed and decidied to give in.  I mean if I couldn't trust Daemon, who could i trust?  I smiled remembering that corny line of his.  It was one of the first things he told me when we met at the club; I was there for my interview and he was there with the rest of the Haven, the band.  He had been playing around on the drums and disrupting practice.  If it hadn't been for him and this apartment...I allowed myself a small shudder.  I owed Daemon a lot, I could trust him with everything i owe him that much.  "Yes and no.  He does tell me what he expects for the night, gives me a head up on if there is someone special coming in and what they will be wanting, but..."  I paused trying to find the words to continue. "But?"  Daemon pressed, resting his hands on my leg and ankle. "But he keeps asking me questions about myself.  How am i doing?  do i feel well?  would i like something to drink?"  I frowned at Daemon then.  "He always asks me if I want something to drink. Everytime I tell him no, but he keeps asking, as if he knows my answer will change."  I sigh.  "It's really creepy sometimes.  The way he looks at me, those violet eyes of his."
"contacts deary."
"it's not their colour...it's just the way he looks at me, you can almost see the wheels turning in his head, as if hes plotting my destruction."
"Destruction?  A little paranoid are you Rayen?" Daemon smiled at me.  Well of course he could afford to smile, he was never in those meetings with Tobias duHeaven.  Just thinking his name and i wanted to shiver, he had such...power...and i don't mean the fact that he was my boss.  No, there was just something wrong with Tobias duHeaven. "Perhaps I am Daemon, but I can't shake the feelings I get when I am around him.  He just makes me...." I sigh and leave it at that.  Daemon was looking at me, a certain knowing in his features.  "Cheer up Rayen.  You're not the only one who feels like that."  Daemon said smiling at me.  "You should hear what Jareth has to say about our esteemed boss."
"What Jareth has to say? hmm I don't think my innocent ears could stand such a thing."  Daemon let out a laugh then. "I don't know what's funnier, the fact that you are probably right, or that you still claim to have innocent ears."  I smiled.  Daemon could always cheer me up.  "What time is it?"
"Why are you so worried about the time.  You really shouldn't go to work on that ankle anyway.  So how about you call in?"
"Don't tempt me."
"I'm tempting you."
"I'm tempted."  I laugh.  "Okay okay, give me the phone. Let's just hope Mr. duHeaven doesn't fire me for missing work or just generally blow a fuse." Daemon hands me the phone, and I allow myself a worried glance at him before dialing Club Trix's number.  Daemon gives me a thumbs up and winks at me, then promptly leaves the room.  So much for moral support. I listened to the ringing, wondering who exactly was going to answer, Tobias or that so called secretary of his, Juno.  There was something off about her too, like how she was completely devoted to Tobias, as if he could do no wrong.  She followed him around like a love sick puppy and most days he barely gives her the time of day.  Most days...though rumor has it, okay, not a rumor, a well known fact that Rakas caught them having sex in his office.  Rakas had only told Jareth, and of course Jareth had told everyone.  Poor Rakas was probably more embarrsed then Juno, but he hid it well, he hid everything well.  "Club Trix, duHeaven speaking."  I was snapped back out of my memories when i heard Tobias's silken voice on the phone.  I shivered and tried to formulate a greetings. "Ah, Mr...."
"What is it that you want Miss Lumier?"
"How did you know it was me?"
"You have a very unique voice Miss Lumier, I believe I have asked you over and over to sing with Haven."
"Ah, yes Mr. duHeaven, you have. Well, please let me get to the reason why I am calling."
"You can't come in to work because of sickness, not to worry Miss Lumier, you may have the night off, though I would greatly appreciate it if you could come in to handle some of the deliveries that are coming in today.  All you would have to do is come in and sit in the office and sign the delivery forms and tell them where to put it. Will you be able to do that for me?"
"Yes that shouldn't be a problem. When would be a good time for me to come in?"  There was a pause on the phone, then Tobias spoke again.  "In about an hour.  For some reason the delivery companies want to deliver while we are busy instead of before we are open. You shouldn't have to be here for very long Miss Lumier, no more then two hours I think.  If there are still deliveries to come I will have Juno handle it."
I bit my lip then, thinking of how to approach this situation, i did not want Juno screwing up my system.  No matter how many times I have tried to tell her where things should go, she always manages to screw it up.  Apparently I had sighed, or perhaps Tobias really is a mind reader. "I take it you would prefer for someone else to handle it when you leave?"
"Yes Mr. duHeaven I would."  It was always best to be completely honest with Tobias.  It was like he was a human lie detector.  I was biting my lip again,  waiting for his responce.  How did he make me so nervous?
"Very well Miss Lumier, I shall handle any deliveries after you leave."
"Thank you Mr. duHeaven."
"See you at 11:00 then.  Take care Miss Lumier."  There was a soft click, and then I hang up my phone.  I sigh and then look down at my ankle. It needed to be wrapped.  As if on cue, Daemon walked in the door of my room with an ace bandage and a cold pack.  He was right, it was swelling more.  I smile and move back to let him sit on my bed, straightening my left leg so Daemon could wrap it.  "The doctor is in."  Daemon said as he flopped on the bed beside my leg. i winced as the bed jostled my leg.  "Well you do have a healing touch.  How did you get that anyway?"
"No clue, seems I always had it."
"Well, I'm glad you have it. It seems to have come in handy."
"So what did the big bad boss say?"  Daemon asked as he applied the cold pack to my swollen ankle giving me a wink.  I hold the cold pack steady on my ankle with a sigh. "He wants me to come in to sign for delieveries. Why he can't handle it himself I have no idea."
"Well you know Tobias, he likes to be catered to hand and foot.  Luky for him Juno, has no problem doing that for him. I wonder how he does that." Daemon said sighing.
I just laugh and take the cold pack off then grab the ace bandage and wrap my ankle. With that done, the cold pack went back on the ankle and I then dared to glance at myself in my mirror across from my bed.  My hair was in disarray, i would have to fix that too.  I glanced at Daemon, giving him the once over again.  He had allowed himself to sprawl across the bed arms behind his head, eyes closed.  Well, I assumed both eyes were closed, his hair still persisted to cover his bad eye.  I once again fought the urge to uncover the eye.  I knew he would take offense. I wished and wished he wasn't so self concious about it. I had seen his eye clearly, one or twice before, when i had walked in on him doing his stage makeup for instance.  I had been fine, but Daemon had been startled.  He quickly let his hair fall across his eye, and told me not to ask as he moved away from the mirror.  I had simply nodded, and continued on my way to my room, understanding taking place.  I hadn't brought it up, I had decided to let Daemon tell me on his own time.  So far, he had just become more comfortable around me, not really caring if his hair was perfectly covering his eye. Still, he had yet to bring it up.  I decided to tickle him to get my mind off of things.  He immediately went into a burst of giggles and squirmed trying to get my hands off of his ribs. "Hey! That's not fair!  That was a surprise attack!"  I grin, and just shrug my shoulders, before stretching my legs and gingerly putting my feet on the floor. "At least I will get to sit down for two hours and do nothing but sign forms and tell the drivers where i want the stuff at.  hmm thatt is a question though, who is going to bartend in my place?"  I glance at Daemon.  "Tobias will probably do it.  He used to bartend before he hired you."  I tried to process this information...Tobias....bartending?  I burst out laughing.  I couldn't help it, big bad Tobias with his short spiked black hair and violet eyes, dressed like the sterotypical hollywood vampire, bartending?!  Daemon started to laugh as well. "It's true though. He did bartend in between hiring people. Actually you are the person who has stayed the longest."
"Why did the others go away?"
Daemon shrugged.  "Porbably couldn't deal with Tobias, or the stress, or maybe he fired them, i don't know really.  We would all come in, only to discover that Tobias was back behind the bar.  Man can make a mean drink though."
I shook my head.  I still couldn't picture him acutally working, but at least i had the oppurtunity to see it for real tonight.  Daemon glanced at his watch then got up off my bed stretching. "Time for me to get ready for the show. What do you think Rayen, purple or blue tonight?"
"you know i think you look best in the blue."
"yah brings out the color of my eye right?"  He chuckled and winked at me.  "Blue it is then. I just hope the other guys aren't wearing that strange floresnt orange again. blaugh. totally clashed with my hair."
I laughed as i rememberd what happened the other night, when the band attacked Daemon and redid his make up. They had only wanted to "match" they said.  Daemon was right, it had clashed with his hair horribly. I got gingerly on my feet and hobbled carefully over to my vanity.  I loved old victorian-esq furniture, and my vanity was my prized possesion.   one of the few things that i made sure moved with me wherever i went.  at one point it was the only piece of furniture i owned. I sat down, and begin to redo my hair.  Brushing the knots out that had somehow accumlated, one small flower petal fell from my hair.  I picked it up.  It was from the same flower in the meadow in my dream...
