~Chapter 2~
I was bored, oh so bored. And so close to insanity i felt like screaming. There had been exactly 3 deliveries in a whole hour, and they all three came within 15 minutes of each other as soon as i sat down in the office. I had used the back entrance not wanting to wade through all those people hobbling on my bad ankle, so i had yet to see Tobias bartending. I had planned on going out when the band was playing a slow song. Maybe people would be sitting down then, and i could get out easier, and pass by the bar at the same time. heh. Maybe i should leave Tobias a tip. I let myself grin at the thought and checked my watch for what seemed the 30th time in the past minute. I still had 30 minutes before i was off duty, just like the last time i checked. oh, wait, 29 minutes. I let out a sigh and decide to head out into the hallway. Out of the dressing room/ bathroom walked out a delivery guy. I smiled and waved at him. "Looking for me?" He smiled and walked over clipboard in hand. "Yah, can you sign for a delivery?"
"Thats what i'm here for. So.." I reach for the clipboard, "what are you delivering?"
"Absinth."
"ah....we were getting a bit low, hmm, i guess that means Mr. duHeaven is planning another vamp night." I sign on the dotted line where mr, hmm, i take a quick glance at his uniform, no name tag, well mr cute had told me to sign. "a vamp night? now i wouldn't mind coming to one of those. should provide some interesting entertainement."
"forgive me mr...."
"oh, sorry, call me Chase."
"Well forgive me Chase, but you don't look the type that would frequent a goth club, let alone come to a vamp night. You look more like a meal." Chase gave me a grin and laughed. "You're right, i don't. but i love to watch people, and since i have never watched a vampire before..." he shrugs." just seems like it would be a very interesting night." I hand him the clipboard and point to the door straight down the hallway. "Well since i dont know when we will be needing this, just put it in the storage room. On the left hand side, there are some shelves...." I stop and glance at him, "they come in two twelve packs or four 6 packs?" Chase raised an eyebrow at me "four six packs to a case....why?" I looked down at the sheet, we only had two cases. good. "ah, that means you are going to help me unpack the cases."
"I am?" Chase said with a grin.
"Yep. how can you say no to an injured nightclub worker?" I raised my pant leg far enough for him to see the bandage wrapped aorund my foot and ankle.
"well since you put it like that."
"wonderful I will meet you there." I turned and one hand on the wall, hobbled my way to the storage room. Before I could let out a yelp, I was grabbed from behind and lifted up. I turned my head to see Mr. Chase grinning at me. "what do you think you are doing?" I asked my voice slightly raised from startlement and perhaps a twinge of anger.
"I am helping the injured nightclub worker." Chase said as he walked down the hall to the storage room. I let out a frustrated sigh and let myself relax in mr cute chase's embrace. "I hope you aren't expecting more then the standard tip for this."
"There is a standard tip?" Just then the backstage door opened and in walked Tobias. oh this is just grrrrrrreat. Tobias looked at me, then looked at chase. well more like glared at chase. "Hi boss.Just so you know, this was not my idea." I said from Chase's arms. Chase picking up on the subtle tones, gently put me back down. Well almost gently, I had put my full weight on my injured ankle and couldn't stop myself from letting out a whimper. Quicker then a blink, Tobias had Chase backed against the wall, his hand around his throat. I raised my eyebrow. What the hell?
"Mr. duHeaven..." I was being ignored. "Tobias!" He turned and looked at me then turned and looked at chase.
"Don't touch my bartender again." He let Chase go and turned towards me. "Miss Lumier, my apologies, you may go home now. He was the last delivery schedulged for tonight." I nod and hobbled toward the door. As I passed Chase, i glanced at him and mouthed sorry. He gave me a quick nod, and followed Tobias to the storage room. I made it all the way to the door, before remembering i had to call a cab. I sigh, turn back around and head to the back stage door. I opened the door to be blasted by the sound of a Haven original song. Hard metal and nothing but double kick. I grin and close the door behind me shutting out most of the light. I made my way extremely carefuly to the one of the small doors that opened up into the club itself. I was so glad for Deacon's insistence on keeping the backstage area neat. We were alike in that way, **** about how things are organized. Well I was more lax at the house rumor has it that Deacon was like that all the time. I opened the door just as the song ended and hobbled out, closing the door behind me. I hobbled as quickly as i could through the dance floor area and weaved my way through the tables. I floped down on an empty barstool and waited for Juno or Tobias to come to the bar and notice me and hand me the phone. I heard Jareth announcing a 15 minute break and waved at the guys as they flocked down off of the stage. Jareth was the first to reach me and greeted me in his usual way. A quick peck on the cheek and cue...
"Hey beautiful."
"I bet you call all the girls that."
"You're right, but i mean it with you." Jareth gave me a wink and sat on the barstool beside me. Tobias walked behind the bar then, and started handing bottle water to the guys. He sat one down in front of me without a glance at me, and then handed me the cordless phone. Daemon interrupted me then. "Who you calling girly?" He glanced at me then went back to retouching his makeup. The heat from the lights had caused some of his blue eyeliner to run a little. "Calling a cab. I can't walk home you know."
"Aww, you don't need to do that, I can take you home." Daemon said, snapping the mirror compact shut and handing it back to Deacon. "Thanks Dek. Rakas, grab the little missy and put her in the car for me would you?" I glanced at Rakas who just grinned at me. "Sure, that's no problem." His deep voice rumbled. Without warning I was lifted up in the air again. Well much higher this time. Rakas was freaking tall, and all muscle. he lifted me as if i was a rag doll. I just managed to reach down and grab my bottle of water before he made his way to the door. Daemon was trailing behind whistling a merry tune. "Bye beautiful!" I heard Jareth call out as the doors swung shut. Daemon had skipped ahead and had the passenger side door open for Rakas to deposit me in the car. "Thanks Rakas." I said as he placed me gently on the seat. "No problem Rayen keep off that ankle and take care of yourself alright?"
"Sure thing. I have my book waiting by my favorite chair, and your guys demo cd in the player. I'm all set." Rakas laughed, that laugh always reminded me of thunder. "Alright Rayen. Goodnight. Daemon?"
"Yah?" Daemon had climbed into the driverside and was buckling up when he glanced at Rakas. "Try not to scare Rayen senseless with your driving." I laughed then when Daemon pouted at Rakas.
"aww, you mean no doughnuts?"
"No doughnuts." Rakas laughed again, and shut the door. I buckled up and Daemon started the car. Whistling all the while, he made a way through the parking lot and turned down the road heading for our apartment. "How is your ankle doing Rayen?"
"Still hurts some, but better. The wrap has helped a lot."
"Good good, so um... what do you think of the band tonight? We're pretty on right?" Okay....this was interesting. What did Daemon want to ask me? He hardly ever beat around the bush like this, so it must be embarrassing for him to bring up. "Daemon, what is it you want to ask me?" Daemon quickly glanced at me and grinned shaking his head as he looked back at the road. "How do you do that Rayen?"
"Do what?"
"Know me so well?" I laughed. What could i say? "I just do. I think it comes from living with you." He stopped at the red light, left blinker on. "You're probably right. I was just curious as to...um...well..." The light turned green and Daemon took the turn. "well what?" I asked prodding.
"Well, why was it that Tobais was looking at you like that?" I was caught off guard. "Huh? what?"
"Tobias...he was staring at you. You didn't notice?"
"No...when he went back behind the bar he didn't once look at me." Daemon laughed then. "What?" I asked "What's so funny?"
"Ah Rayen, one second you are in tune with the universe and the next you are clueless. While you and Jareth were having your regular exchange, Tobias was starring at you. And I mean starring, not just a glance, but starring." He pulled into the driveway of our apartment building. "aww. I should have told Rakas to get in the back seat so he could carry you up those stairs." I just smiled and shook my head as I opened the door. "I'm not helpless you know. I can make it up there just fine. Besides he already had to carry me down the stairs, and from the car, and to the car, I bet he's glad to have a break from carrying my big butt all over the place."
"Nah. It's such a nice butt after all." I bust out into giggles then. The way Daemon had said that sounded so full of sincerity, and the look on his face when he noticed me giggling was priceless and made me giggle even harder. "Well it's true!" He shouted in his defense. I quieted my giggles and just smiled at him.
"So um, Rayen...did something happen?" He had looked away when asking me the question but now was looking at me waiting for an answer. It did seem important to him, he hadn't even bothered to fix his hair back over his bad eye.
"Yah, something a little on the strange side. I promise to tell you later when you guys get off for the night. As it is, you're going to be a little late, and if you stay even longer, Deacon will kill you. Or Jareth...possibly Rakas."
"Alright, but you do promise right?"
"I promise." i said, crossing my heart. Daemon smiled and I got out of the car and shut the door behind me. As he backed up, I waved and made my way to the steps. I started slowly climbing then, taking my time and trying my best not to put all the weight on my injured ankle. I couldn't stop my mind from wandering about the everything that happened. Why was Tobias starring at me, why did he almost strangle the poor delivery guy, and how did i hurt my ankle in the first place? All the problems of the day seemed to be have cause by my ankle. Making my way from the stairs to the apartment door, I started looking for my keys. These pockets on these pants seemed to go on forever. Finally finding them i went to put the key in the door, only to find, it was already unlocked. I stared at the door handle, then raised my eyes to stare at the door. Should i? Or should I do the sensible thing and turn around and hobble my way to a payphone and call the police. Maybe I forgot to lock it? The one time in over a year, surely not. But...it is possible...I raked my brain trying to remember, when the door knob started turning. I leaped back, putting my hand to my mouth to stifle the cry of pain from landing on my ankle. I watched as the door seemed to open in slow motion. I couldn't move...I was transfixed. There in the doorway stood the stranger from my dream. I felt my whole body tense, ready to run, even the throbbing pain from my ankle was gone. I was looking into his eyes, those deep green eyes, i knew then what a deer felt like when it saw those two approaching lights, a sense of awe, wonderment, beauty, and the sense of fear because now you know that the end for you is very near. I couldn't scream, i couldn't move though everything in my brain and body told me to. "come in quickly." like silk his voice flowed over me. I tried to move in the opposite direction, to just stay still, but i couldn't stop myself from obeying. I went into the apartement, blushing as my arm brushed his chest. Why was I blushing? I turned to see him close the door behind me, and lock it. No escape for me now.
